Amy A. Narvestad was born in Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota, and raised on a farm. She graduated from Canby High School, where she was editor of the school newspaper, and went to work at the age of 17 for the Canby News. She married in 1936 and had two children. She owned the Sacred Heart News for nine years. Widowed in 1954, she met her current husband, Carl Narvestad, in 1966 when seeking information about the history of Wang Township. The two visited Norway and have since collaborated on a number of books, histories, and genealogies. They live in Granite Falls, Minnesota.
