Imagine having to sleep in a chicken coop in the Minnesota winter. Floyd Wachs didn’t have to imagine it, he lived it. Wachs grew up on a hardscrabble farm in a rural area of northern Minnesota. But he never imagined he would become a successful Sears Roebuck executive. Floyd off the Farm is his delightful account of rising from humble beginnings to unexpected success.

It wasn't easy growing up in the primitive rural area of northern Minnesota. When the late Floyd Wachs was born, he was taken home from the hospital in a horse-drawn sleigh in subzero weather. By the time he was twelve, he wanted to get away from the farm, but he was also determined to finish high school. Wachs enlisted in the Navy at the age of seventeen and served in World War II. He attended Walker School of Art in Minneapolis while working at Sears Roebuck, where he eventually became a high-ranking credit executive.
