From 1968 through 1969, the Chapman family took an amazing 36,000-mile camping trip through Europe and North Africa in a Volkswagen bus. Along the way they, spend a night listening to the gunfire of East Berlin, cope with strangling bureacracy in Algeria, and visit hundreds of beautiful and reknown sites throughout Europe and North Africa.

Everett Chapman grew up in farming country in west-central Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Chicago with a master's degree in world history. He spent two-and-a-half years in the Army during World War II in North Africa and Sicily, where he discovered his love for other cultures and countries. His military experience was the beginning of his passion for travel, and through his teaching career, he would take his family traveling. Everett remarks, "We had been a family of travelers even when the children were in the bottle-fed age." Before home schooling curriculums became an option, Everett and his wife tutored their children in language arts, history, math, and art appreciation. They returned to school with no loss of credits and moved ahead with their classmates. Everett taught high school for 29 years in Bloomington, Minnesota.
