Ed Mako was born in Dickson City, Pennsylvania. As a boy, he attended Girard College in Philadelphia, a school for fatherless orphans. He has also attended the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and St. Thomas University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He has a BA in English, Psychology, Sociology, and Education and a Master's degree in Education. His career has included everything form short order cook to high school teacher to mayor of Lakeville, Minnesota.
