Ambrose Loughlin was born in Scotland in 1955. He left school at the age of fifteen and took on an apprenticeship in the local shipyard as a plater/shipwright. When he was eighteen, he joined his first shotokai karate club. After training in karate and judo, he returned to Scotland, joined the fire service, and decided to train full time in shotokan karate. He ran his first karate club with his father in Quarriers children's home from 1982 until its closing in 1985. From there he traveled and studied various martial arts and has, for the last six years, ran a small club in his home town of Port Glasgow with his associated sensie George Taft. He retired from the fire service in 1992 and now works as a passive self-defense instructor in Glasgow.
