Griffin describes an evil facing modern American Christianity: Triumphalism infecting its churches, schools, political and economic institutions, and its very culture. He shows that Jesus placed his priority on mutually respect and nurturing relationships. This is a source of hope for individuals and society. Christianity owes America a vision of Jesus unobscured by triumphalism: Jesus as brother.

Phillip Griffin holds a Ph. D. from Boston University. For many year, he was Chairman of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. From his background in parish ministry, business, and education, he examines the excesses of competition and avarice that are just below the surface of popular religious and secular enterprises. His personal experience with fundamentalist religion and entrepreneurial enterprise give credibility to both his critique and also his appreciation for each. He is able to show how both have grown out of developing American culture, and have both energized and degraded American public life.
